What things are you going to pursue in your music life? Is this the year that you get serious and really learn your instrument? Is this the year you finally get those lessons that you know you need?
Reflections that come to me as I grow toward a higher level of expression on my instrument, and a more fulfilling music career.

2012
I know it has been a while since I have posted here. I honestly haven't felt very inspired to write until recently. But I feel there is a shift happening for me that coincides with the new year. I really feel this is the year to take all the barriers down and pursue the things that you sincerely desire. The word "TRY" no longer exists to me. In the words of Yoda, "Do or Do Not, There is no Try." If it's not worth doing, it's not really worth wishing for. I have some things that I have desired for a while, but I have not gone after them. I have allowed outside circumstances to keep me from them. I have said I don't have the money to do that. In some instances, I have just not done it while it was sitting right in front of me to do. These things are no more. I have some things that I know will make me a better musician, but I have been too lazy to practice them. One of them is SIGHT READING. My playing will improve exponentially WHEN I step my reading game. I know the basics, but I am not where I want to be. I will be able to get so much more information in my brain. Laura Bush once said that reading (in the scholastic setting) is the most important skill because it is the way you learn every other skill. I believe this applies to the music as well. You can put a piece of music in front of you, and if you can read it, you can INSTANTLY PLAY IT. This is a powerful skill that most of the top players have. I am also putting huge emphasis on on my ear training as well. I have a decent ear. But I know the weaknesses that I have. When I improve my ear, I will be able to hear something and play it with little to no problem.

Hello Jusplayinmybass!!
ReplyDeleteYou'll never know the inspiration you've been in my life until we get to the other side. Thanx! likewise, I am determined to learn as much as I can about my craft, including reading. Come too far to continue on the same path. 20 years ago, I thought myself too big for my britches, saying "I don't need to read anymore... I know this stuff". Big mistake! I used to read treble clef in my teens and have been asked about teaching guitar, declining the opportunities. Now saying to myself (totally broke), what happened dude, you can do it, go back to it, too. We've got two pianos here collecting dust. that's what really stirred me as a kid. I always wanted a piano teacher. Well I'm the same kid, only now with a few miles on him and desire to stop playing games, i can teach myself to start. Now really wanting to learn and share the craft also, applying it to God's purposes.
Glad to hear you are pushing forward. Please keep me posted on your progress.
